Originaire de Providence, Rhode Island, Geoff Mullen est un subtil manipulateur sonore déroulant des textures riches, « organiques », granuleuses,
magnifiquement intriquées, faites de mini-drones « évolutifs », de notes tordues/pliées au-delà de leurs formes originelles et de battements, palpitations, éructations, miaulements provenant de l’exploration d’une guitare altérée et « abusée ».

En 1997 – après 5 années (et autant d’albums) de concerts intenses, souvent chaotiques & confrontationnels,
malgré moult louanges & adoubements de la part de Thurston Moore et Lou Barlow, et surtout de leurs pairs de Bananafish ou To Live And Shave In LA,
- le free-noise-rock trio
(=initialement, duo mari+femme=Adris Hoyos + Bill Orcutt)
HARRY PUSSY, implose.

En 2009, « A New Way To Pay Old Debts », album-ovni, enregistré à la maison par un revenant -
- disparu depuis une douzaine d’années -
est un triomphe – unanimement acclamé, il est aussitôt sold out & culte.

Son mélange, très brut de « guitare pourrie, voix exaltée » (Métamkine) – joué, marmonné, hurlé & enregistré à fleur de peau -
- remue les fantômes d’un blues rural, archétypal et cru, et tout en la déconstruisant & recombinant, il tutoie l’immémoriale essence des racines de la
musique nord-américaine (ex. Charley Patton, Elmore James, Lightning Hopkins, Robert Johnson…).

Cependant
peu s’en souviennent
mais
le tout premier album solo de Bill Orcutt -
- sobrement intitulé Solo – est sorti en 1996 sur Audible Hiss.

Electrique & brutal, il ressemble encore beaucoup – par son brassage d’échos & d’influences free-no wave
-avant-jazz-japanoise-etc. – à l’œuvre de HARRY PUSSY, trio-matrice, alors en fin de parcours.

Chose curieuse: le dernier morceau de ce disque s’appelle, bizarrement – prophétiquement? – Yes Blues.

Le nouvel album de Bill Orcutt How the thing sings vient de sortir chez Editions MEGO.

Thomas Bonvalet devient L’Ocelle Mare en 2005, un an après la démission de Cheval de Frise (2004),
duo de math-post-rock bordelais, fortement inspiré par
Don Caballero, Storm & Stress, Gastr del Sol et… Derek Bailey.

Est-on vraiment obligé de le savoir?

Solitaire, reclus à la campagne, dans une forêt, le guitariste re-conceptualise & re-mûrit son approche de la musique,
s’émancipant de l’empreinte laissé par son duo d’origine.

L’Ocelle Mare est un one-man-band passionnant, profondément original, atypique, rare.

Banjo six cordes (dont le chevalet est parfois déplacé en bordure de cercle, créant une vibration évoquant la distorsion ),
harmonicas, lames d’harmonicas, orgue à bouche, diapasons, plectre de pavot sec, piano, microphone, frappements de pieds, métronome…
